Today's summary: Movie party at Josh's.

Writing after the fact -- I was gone all day with Orlando, for a movie party at Josh's. Stefan, Dan, Lori (or is it Laurie?), flyingcar, and then later George. Lots of fun.

We watched... (with IMDB links)

  • Cast Away (IMDB summary)
Tom Hanks did a GREAT job as a FexEx employee stranded on a desert island by a plane crash. I'd never seen this one before, but, I did have a dream about it when it came out that pretty much summarized the whole movie and the ending (weeeird...).

  • O Brother, Where Art Thou? (IMDB summary)
Hard to describe. Kind of bluegrass surrealism with elements from the Odyssey. Three chain gang escapees and their escapades, on the way to finding an unexpected treasure.

  • Quills (IMDB summary)
A movie about the Marquis de Sade. Geoffrey "Totally Believable Even During Full Frontal Nudity" Rush, Kate "I'm Skinny Now But Hollywood Still Pretends I Don't Exist" Winslet, Joaquin "Damn I'm Hot" Phoenix, and Michael "I'm Evil, Can You Tell?" Caine.

  • The Dream is Alive (IMDB summary)
An IMAX movie about the space shuttle, circa 1985. Almost any kid who grew up in the Washington DC area has seen this movie -- this and "To Fly" were basically the only things in the Air and Space Museum's IMAX theater for years, seems like. It's kind of nice to see something about the Space Shuttle that predates the Challenger tragedy... Not that their deaths weren't important! What I mean is, nowadays it seems like every time anybody mentions the Shuttle, they feel obliged to have the Challenger tragedy consciously looming over everything. It changed a lot of attitudes and totally dampened the wonder, in a way, and I don't think the Challenger crew would've wanted that. I must admit, I got a teeny bit nervous during the launch sequences...

  • Some Other IMAX movie. I can't remember because I fell asleep. Oops. I'll ask Orlando later.
