Journal entry for August 16, 2001Today's summary: Working on my prototype shadowbox for insect specimen sculptures. After having a frame shop cut and glue the maple for my 12 by 12 by 3 inch shadowbox frame, I had to figure out exactly how I wanted to finish it. So, I sanded the surface down to a very fine grit, dusted, and stained it with a light natural-looking cherry stain. It's warmer than the typical yellowish maple stains, I like it a lot. I also think this shade of stain will work well with the black velvet liner I plan to use for the shadowbox. And, the walls will probably be covered with velvet too, or at the very least painted black -- that way the sculpture inside the shadowbox is basically floating in a sea of black no matter what the angle of view. I'll have photos ASAP, once one is made. Meanwhile I'll work on a schematic diagram so any interested collectors can see exactly what they're getting.
