Today's summary: Carved soapstone chunk with fossil fish.

As a wedding/housewarming present for my friend Paula, I found a natural chunk of soapstone to carve with my new Dremel tool. Carving soapstone is pretty easy with the Dremel, conveniently... And this chunk already had a plane cut for the base, and a plane cut to carve upon, so I was all set. I cut a fossil fish type design into the surface, as you can see. It's not very obvious unless the lighting is just right... but, that's OK.

I'm going to the Museum of Natural History with her this weekend, but this is too heavy to lug around downtown all day. So, I'll give it to her at work, and I'll write later about how she reacts. :)

(Later...) I never did get to go to the museum with Paula, but, I visited her Sunday. She seemed to really like the sculpture, which is all I needed. She has this REALLY cute kitten named Jane... she's the tiniest kitten I've EVER seen for her age. Her proportions are normal for her age, maybe even a little older, but she's just super tiny. It's cute and strange at the same time, like taking a regular 4 month old cat and putting her in a Xerox machine at 50% reduction.
