Journal entry for November 21, 2001

Today's summary: New artist's statement and bio.

I needed a better bio and statement for the show... and I've been needing it for my website, anyway.

Artist's Statement

My dangerous sculpture combines my two loves, art and zoology. The "specimens" have scalpels or razor blades for wings, and often include other damage-inflicting objects like bullets or barbed fish hooks. The precious metal wire is 14 karat gold filled, sterling silver, or niobium. I choose a pseudo-Latin name for each specimen, one that feels appropriate in an elegant or whimsical way.

Real insects and other arthropods are natural sculptures. To me, they are the ultimate expression of functionally elegant architecture. Beyond that mystique, they're also intimidating in their own small way. In my own work I strive to enshrine both of these factors: jeweled attraction and perceived danger.

Yes, those blades are sharp -- they sometimes do injure me, as I create each specimen. I also often use a blowtorch, acid, and other hazardous materials. Unfortunately, gloves usually just get in my way. As a result, I must stay careful and focused at all times in order to minimize risk. When I sculpt each specimen, this respectful caution results in a meditative mode.

Biography

I have been sculpting, drawing, and creating all sorts of artwork for as long as I can remember. Throughout my childhood in the Washington, DC area, I kept insects and other pets, and used their study as inspiration for my art. Now that I've focused on insects as sculpture, I feel that my art expresses that childhood fascination to the utmost.

As a studio art major at University of Maryland, I competed for and received one of the two available Creative and Performing Arts Scholarships. While I was there, I picked up a second degree in biology, with zoology emphasis. My work has won several awards over the years, including second place in an international art competition.

I am also a professional web designer and digital artist. I created my own portfolio website, updating my online artist's journal daily. I take all my own photos for the site and for slides. On top of that, I do all my own framing, help maintain several online communities, and pursue other hobbies too numerous to mention. Everything I do supports my creative pursuits, directly or indirectly, and as a result I still manage to make time for my artwork.
